We all know it and yet getting a grip on it can sometimes seem like holding on to a soap bar in the shower. 

  • Deviations from the planned sequence of events robs you of time and other resources; direct as well as Indirect. Although extra time and distance spent on rectification can be hard to quantify, they are obviously never free of charge. 
  • Equally, wrong / late / Incomplete deliveries and/or Pick-up’s, as well as absence of pro-active communication may cause irritation and loss of Image. 
  • Post-delivery back-office adjustments and rectifications are also costly to the extent that manual processes are incurred... and they usually are.

Instead of viewing each step in the order process as an addition to the original order, we see them as checkpoints - like traffic lights on a road - where the order only moves forward when the previous step shows green. 

Such an approach also carries the risk of being too rigid. Life is full of surprises and not everything is perfect and predictable – of course, we know this – and we also know that delivery must always take place no matter what.

We are fully aware, that there is no one other than the dispatcher and the deliverer - whether that be by foot, bicycle, moped or vehicle - to handle all the incomplete orders and odd situations, the extras, the undocumented changes, the no-show staff, the broken vehicles, and all the truly external factors such as weather, parking, traffic congestion etc. etc. you know the list. 

The further in the process we are from the time of the receipt of the order, the more unpredictable the circumstances, because the more things can go wrong, and if not adjusted along the way they tend to accumulate. 

Having the mandate to execute, is not the same as having the ability in terms of tools and time… and vice versa.
